Xbox ROG Ally X Review: Why It Changed the Way I Game

Let me start by saying this: I own an Xbox ROG Ally X, and it was one of the best gaming technology purchases I have ever made.

In this article, I will give an honest gamer and consumer perspective on my experiences with the device after more than 100 hours of use. I will explain why it has not only made me want to buy the next Xbox, but also why I am comfortable with the possibility of a higher price point for future hardware. I will also be sharing facts that can be backed up through my gamer profiles, X posts, game streams, and VODs.

The Xbox ROG Ally X debuted in a crowded handheld gaming market. Before buying it, I owned both a Nintendo Switch 2 and a Steam Deck. However, I quickly realized that neither the game library nor the overall capabilities of those systems matched what Xbox was bringing to the table.

Yes, the $1,000 price tag made me think twice. But I am glad I did not let that stop me. I believe I purchased mine on October 23, 2025, shortly after launch. Like many people, I was skeptical at first, but those doubts disappeared quickly.

Having Steam support was definitely a bonus, but my primary reason for buying the system was simple: I wanted to play Xbox games on the go. Not on a tablet. Not through a computer. I wanted a powerful gaming machine in the palm of my hands that could give me the Xbox experience wherever I was.

Somewhere among my thousands of posts on X are questions—many of them repetitive—directed toward the Xbox leadership team, asking them to finally enter the handheld market. For years, I wanted the platform I preferred most to become portable. Eventually, Xbox answered that call.

And they did not answer it with an underpowered device that relied entirely on console streaming or repackaged versions of older games. They delivered a handheld capable of playing modern titles, connecting to my Xbox ecosystem, and in many cases not even requiring me to own an Xbox console at all—even though, Lord willing, I always will.

One thing that impressed me immediately was how seamlessly my Steam library transferred over. Games downloaded quickly and were playable as soon as setup was complete.

But Xbox and ASUS did not stop there.

The inclusion of the Ubisoft app was a huge win for me. Ubisoft has been one of my favorite game studios for years, and I have even added some of their game logos to my tattoo collection. Being able to download and play Ubisoft titles directly on the handheld was fantastic.

EA was also onboard, bringing support for games like Madden, which remains one of my favorite franchises to play and stream. Having all of that available in a portable format was incredible.

Then there are games like Starfield. As someone who travels and still enjoys day-to-night dates with my wife—“The Queen”—after nearly 15 years together, carrying a lightweight Xbox with me has been a lot of fun. Pairing the handheld with a quality set of headphones creates a level of immersion that few handhelds can match.

I have logged well over 100 hours into Starfield, completed a playthrough, and started another. I would often take advantage of the handheld when I wanted to spend time with my wife or friends without being tied to a television or gaming setup.

Performance has also been excellent. Every game I have downloaded has run smoothly. In the year or so that I have owned the device, I honestly cannot remember experiencing a major game crash.

Part of that reliability comes from how easy it is to keep updated. You simply open Windows Update, install updates, restart the device, and you are ready to go. Armoury Crate handles additional updates and system configurations, and the process is equally straightforward.

Anyone who has been gaming for decades, like myself, knows cloud gaming can sometimes introduce issues. Yet I have been able to use my Xbox ROG Ally X successfully through my T-Mobile hotspot and through Wi-Fi networks across the Pacific Northwest, East Coast, and Hawaii.

As a longtime Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, I also appreciate access to first-party Xbox titles on day one. Beyond that, Game Pass provides access to an ever-growing library that far surpasses the old Xbox Live Gold model.

Games available include Starfield, NBA 2K26, Madden NFL 26, State of Decay, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Fallout 76, the Fallout series, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls Online, Call of Duty titles, Dishonored, and many more. New additions arrive monthly and sometimes weekly.

Many of these games are labeled as handheld compatible and run exceptionally well. Even some titles marked as unsupported are worth trying because they often perform better than expected. In many cases, they simply have not yet met Xbox’s standards for receiving the official compatibility designation.

I also enjoy that Metacritic scores are available when browsing games. While some players choose games based on review scores, I personally focus more on graphics, storytelling, and customization.

I cannot wait to fire up future titles like State of Decay 3 and Fable on my Xbox ROG Ally X.

When it comes to storage, my system shipped with a 1TB drive. While that is respectable, I enjoy having a large variety of games installed at once. Because of that, I am considering upgrading to a larger storage solution.

I know many people open their systems and replace the internal storage themselves, but honestly, I would be heartbroken if I damaged my device attempting that. For now, I am exploring safer upgrade options.

Yes, gaming hardware costs more today than it did in the 1990s. However, that is not entirely on Xbox. The economy has played a significant role in raising the cost of gaming overall. Personally, I am willing to pay more if it means having a larger catalog of games ready to play at a moment’s notice.

I would also love to see Xbox and Microsoft explore some type of cloud-based storage solution that could house our game libraries and potentially reduce the need for storage cards. I do not know if that is technically possible, but if Xbox is listening, I would gladly pay for a service like that.

As for performance, let’s use Assassin’s Creed Shadows as an example. The game picks up exactly where I left off on console, and the graphics feel remarkably close to a traditional console experience. The ability to take these worlds and stories anywhere I go is one of the system’s greatest strengths.

Battery life has been solid for me. I own the official Xbox ROG Ally X carrying case from Best Buy, which stores my charger, headphones, and other accessories. I usually play in Performance Mode because it offers a balance between visual quality and battery life, although there are higher-performance settings available.

There are also docks and accessories available that allow users to transform the Xbox ROG Ally X into more of a desktop gaming setup when they get home. For players moving away from traditional consoles, that flexibility is a huge benefit.

To be completely honest, this handheld has caused me to pause—and in some cases walk away from—other gaming platforms. The combination of hardware, software, upcoming games, and overall convenience has been difficult to ignore.

The recent Xbox Showcase alone demonstrated an impressive lineup for 2026 and 2027. Games like Blade, Fable, and many others appear poised to take full advantage of the handheld experience.

Having the Xbox platform available anywhere I go has made me want to invest even more into the Xbox ecosystem.

As for why it has made me want to buy the next Xbox, the answer is simple. Reports indicate the next Xbox will feature even deeper PC integration. If that vision becomes reality, it could essentially be a more powerful version of what I already love about the Xbox ROG Ally X.

Because of what this handheld has shown me, I would honestly be comfortable spending between $1,500 and $2,000 on a future Xbox system if the specifications, features, and performance justify it. Given the current economy and the technology involved, that pricing would be understandable to me.

If it ends up costing less, great. That simply leaves me with more money to spend on games and accessories.

The games are what continue to draw me toward Xbox. I have even purchased titles that were already included with Game Pass. Starfield is a great example. I bought one of the highest editions available because I enjoyed it so much—and eventually added it to my tattoo collection.

Hopefully, this article has given you an honest perspective from a gamer, streamer, and consumer about why I believe the Xbox ROG Ally X is currently the best handheld gaming device on the market and why I think it is positioned to remain a major force going forward.
